Die Maramureş
Water valley railway
Another attractive and frequently visited travel destination is the water valley with its amazing water valley railway.
A trip by this railway will not only be a special experience for railway fans.
Originally the narrow gauge railroad
was used to transport the cut wood from the Carpathian woods into the lumber mill of the little city Viseu de Sus.
The adventurous and rather jolty track, which proceeds through the forest for more than 40 miles leads from the city
up to the Ukrainian border.
The locomotives, which were only powered by damp in former times, have to manage hundreds of height metres. That is
why nowadays only diesel locomotives are used to carry the wood down into the city. But on the tourist track from
Viseu de Sus to Faina, which is about 30 kilometres long there is still made use of the old damp locomotives.
Besides, there should be mentioned the „funny cemetery“ of the village Sarpanta, some kind of a different obituary.
The crosses, decorated in light blue or various colours should represent the tics of the deceased and some funny
details of his life in a humorous way. Sometimes you can even see what caused the persons death.
