Die Maramureş

Maramures- land of the wooden churches

Landscape and People

Nowadays the Romanian part of Maramures is home for about 600 000 people, mostly Romanians and a minority of Hungarians and Ukrainians.
Maramures is for sure the most original but also the most underdeveloped area of Romania. Between the heights of the Tibles mountains, the Maramures mountains and the Rodna mountains, whose peaks rise more than 2200 metres into the sky, there is a large number of valleys. In those valleys agriculture and animal husbandry are oftentimes a rather decent way of earning money for the farmers and herdsmen. It is even more surprising how open- hearted and hospitable the people of this area welcome foreign visitors. Without hesitating, they share the few things have with the people who pass by their house.
