Die Maramureş

Maramures- land of the wooden churches

Baia Mare

Economically the area around the mining city Baia Mare is the most important one. The „capital“ of the Maramures district has less than 130 000 inhabitants and is clearly the biggest and most important city. Since it was first mentioned at the beginning of the 14th century the population has basically been living of agriculture, mining and wood processing. Wood has always played an important role in this area. The beech-, oak-, and coniferous forests of the mountains have been delivering the treasured resource for centuries. Indispensable as backup material for mining it has also led to a long and unique tradition in wood craft and wood constructions.
