The Banat- melting pot of cultures
Timişoara / Temeswar
Currently the Banat is considered to be among the most highly developed areas of Romania concerning economy. The biggest city, which at the same time represents the historical, cultural and economic centre, is Timisoara (Temeswar) with more than 330000 inhabitants. Especially the Germans living in this city have had an important influence on its history. Nowadays Timisoara is a modern industry and university town. It is developing constantly because of the residence of foreign companies and the investments of the European Union. The townscape is still characterized by the gorgeous buildings of the Austrian empire. It is especially interesting to see the old fort centre of the city as well as the Roman- catholic cathedral with its church square and many other impressive buildings. But also the opera square – the actual city centre-, Josephtown or Elisabethtown are extremely attractive and worth a visit. Besides Timisoara there are other big cities as for example Resita (Reschitz) with more than 80000 inhabitants and Lugoj (Lugosch) with about 55000 inhabitants in the Banat area.
